Tether has minted an additional $1 billion in USDT tokens on the Tron blockchain. This move comes amidst a period of aggressive expansion for the stablecoin operator, having added $13 billion in USDT to Ethereum and Tron platforms since October of the previous year. The newly minted tokens on Tron, as of January 29, are not yet available for transactions or swaps, indicating a strategic reserve for future use.

Tether’s CEO Paolo Ardoino has confirmed that the current minting operation is aimed at future requirements rather than immediate circulation. This decision has sparked discussions among market analysts and investors. Former Bitmex CEO Arthur Hayes pointed out that banks such as JPMorgan could pose a significant threat to Tether and its peers in the stablecoin market. This scenario hinges on regulatory developments permitting banks to issue fiat-backed stablecoins.
