UK Authorities to Hire Crypto Investigator at $50k Salary
According to a notice on recruitment site Civil Service Jobs, the UK’s leading crime commission is on the hunt for a crypto investigator.
NCA Launches Crypto-specific Unit
Per the posting, the new opening falls beneath a project from the agency’s cyber-focused division, the National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU). The NCCU reportedly has plans to set up a “specialized cryptocurrency and virtual assets team.”
The aforementioned unit dubbed the “NCCU Crypto Cell” will have a starting workforce of just 5 personnel. These officers will address matters with ties to assets such as BTC, which the notice described as “proactive cryptocurrency remit.” The NCCU Crypto Cell will have the resources and expertise necessary to target UK-based suspects in crypto crimes.
In addition to conducting their own investigations, the team will also provide specialist advice and guidance to other NCA units working on cryptocurrency-related cases.
The team will sit within NCCU Op Support. The role will support existing and new investigations where specialist cryptocurrency experience is required along with taking a proactive lead in identifying targets for further development.”
Experience Recovering Seed Phrases
Notably, the posting states that potential candidates should be able to provide strategic and tactical advice to senior investigators and other NCA units working on field-relevant cases.
The NCA calls for a strong understanding of how different cryptocurrencies work and the various transaction routes across different platforms. In addition, the prospective investigator should have experience in identifying and recovering seed phrases. Also, advanced tracing skills alongside certified training in cryptocurrencies fall under the agency’s requirements.
The role offers an annual salary ranging from £40,200 to £43,705 ($48,200 to $52,400).
UK Authorities Crack Down on Crypto Crime
With this, the National Crime Agency aims to increase regulatory focus on cryptocurrencies in the UK. This is the latest step in the nation’s efforts to tackle illicit activities such as fraud and money laundering involving cryptocurrencies. In September, last year, legislators unveiled a bill giving authorities power to seize assets used for criminal purposes.
Additionally, all police officers in the country had reportedly received training to investigate and seize cryptocurrencies as of October 2022.
NCA infrastructure investigations director Chris Lewis-Evans commented on the forthcoming NCCU. According to Lewis-Evans, digital assets are generally perceived as an asset class that calls for experts. As such the new opening is crucial to bolster NCA investigations where crypto is used to “enable serious criminality.”
