ARKA NOEGO: Bitcoin and Solidarity on the Ark
The Rise of a Peaceful Revolution
In the 1980s, a genuine popular uprising emerged in Poland, leading to the downfall of the communist regime. While anticommunist intellectuals had a presence in the country, the spark that ignited the peaceful revolution that ended Soviet rule was ignited by the working class. Workers at the Lenin shipyard in Gdańsk initiated a strike in 1980, spreading rapidly across industries and the nation. These workers established the Interfactory Strike Committee, presenting a list of 21 demands. Similar to the reputed tale of Martin Luther nailing his 95 theses to the Church in Wittenberg, they inscribed their demands on wooden boards and displayed them on the shipyard gates.

The Gdańsk strike was prompted by the government’s actions of raising prices in a controlled economy while withholding wage increases. The dismissal of popular forklift operator, Anna Walentynowicz, by Lenin shipyard managers added to the turmoil. This act was perceived as political retribution for her union activities. Surprisingly, the communist government was opposed to independent labor unions, as only government-endorsed unions allied with the ruling communist parties were permitted. The establishment of independent trade unions was a major demand put forth by the Interfactory Strike Committee.
Amidst concerns of possible military intervention by the USSR, the Polish leadership hesitated to take drastic measures. The fear of a national tragedy led to the declaration of Martial Law as a deterrent. Consequently, a decade-long power struggle ensued between the government and citizens, culminating in the overthrow of the communist system in 1989.
The transition to a market economy in Poland was notably peaceful, driven by a widespread social agreement that advocated for reduced government control in the economy. The birth of the Solidarity movement evolved from the Interfactory Strike Committee, championing the ethos of workers standing together in unity to negotiate for better working conditions and wages. Solidarity became the first non-communist, independent trade union in the Soviet Bloc, marking a significant shift.
Bitcoin: A Modern Solidarity Movement
The resonance between Solidarność and the escalating Bitcoin movement is striking. Bitcoin transcends ideological and cultural boundaries, appealing to individuals across various beliefs and political affiliations. The core desire for economic autonomy and preservation of value unites Bitcoin enthusiasts. Governments worldwide have meddled with these fundamental principles, asserting control over spending options and devaluing currency. Bitcoin emerges as a necessary monetary reform, advocating for the separation of money from state influence.
Similar to Solidarity, Bitcoin emerges as a grassroots movement, devoid of centralized ownership. While media attention often focuses on Bitcoin billionaires, the majority of Bitcoin holders are ordinary individuals, predominantly from the working class. Bitcoin symbolizes hope for a future where economic sustainability and personal autonomy are prioritized, reminiscent of the 21 demands of the Interfactory Strike Committee.
Surviving Economic Turmoil: A Lesson from Noah’s Ark
During the Solidarity era, a group of poets and musicians, Jacek Kaczmarski, Przemysław Gintrowski, and Zbigniew Łapiński, toured Poland, inspiring hope through their introspective songs. Their works, laden with metaphorical layers, resonated with the populace, offering a glimpse of a brighter future. The song “Noah’s Ark” highlights the perils of hyperinflation and economic crises, likening them to a deluge that can be weathered through foresight and collective effort.
Survivors of hyperinflation crises understand the devastating impact on livelihoods. In times of economic turmoil, unity and proactive planning are crucial for navigating through the storm. The song “Noah’s Ark” emphasizes the importance of preparation and belief in one’s ability to overcome challenges, a lesson applicable to both historical and contemporary financial crises.
