The co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, has expressed his concerns over the increasing number of political tokens and their potential use as a tool for bribery. In his recent post, Buterin pointed out the possible adverse effects of such tokens particularly when they are linked to powerful politicians. “Now is the time to talk about the fact that large-scale political coins cross a further line…., whose harm is at most contained to mistakes.” Buterin raised concerns about political tokens such as the TRUMP and MELANIA tokens that emerged during Donald Trump’s inauguration. Based on the images of U.S. President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, these tokens became popular first and then lost their value. According to Buterin, these tokens are not only fun to collect—they pose a threat of being used for political gain. He noted that foreign actors may use tokens of this kind to affect political processes and the ethical principles of governance. The risks include the risk of abuse, with Buterin arguing that political tokens could make political bribery unregulated and almost unrestricted. Regulation challenges in the crypto industry Buterin also shared his views on the legal environment of cryptocurrencies, including the actions of the former chairman of the SEC, Gary Gensler.
