U.S. court rules Apple violated an antitrust injunction, freeing crypto apps from in-app payment restrictions. Developers can now add external NFT and blockchain payment links without Apple fees. In a groundbreaking decision, a United States district court has ruled in favor of crypto app developers, allowing them to direct users to payment options outside of Apple’s App Store. The legal disagreement between Apple and Epic Games has forced Apple to adapt its business practices following Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers’ determination of “willful violation” during the previous 2021 court order. Developers Win Right to Add NFT and Crypto Payment Links The court originally granted an injunction to stop Apple from carrying out anti-competitive business practices. The court issued a ruling stating that Apple could not maintain its restrictions regarding third-party payments along with its commission system since these practices were unlawful. The current ruling forces Apple to eliminate all payment fees and commissions on transactions that occur outside the app domain. The court expanded its order to prevent Apple from monitoring and demanding reports about third-party payments and tracking such transactions. Developers have the ability to integrate external payment links in their apps that encompass blockchain transactions together with NFT-related links. Developer victory emerges after years of Apple’s financial and regulatory restrictions for crypto activities through the App Store tax. After the court issued its decision Apple made undisclosed alterations to its App Store rules. Analysis reveals that this newly written language seems unattractive, though some consider it passive-aggressive yet the power of its effect remains considerable.
