McLaren’s Lando Norris kicked things off strong, topping SQ1 and SQ2 and was looking set to grab pole in SQ3, only for Verstappen to pull off a stunning lap in the final moments to pip the Briton to the top spot by seven hundredths of a second. Norris wasn’t surprised to be beaten to pole by the Dutchman however, saying after qualifying, “Of course would have loved to be on pole, but not a surprise for us to be just a bit slower than the Red Bull lately, so still pretty happy.” Oscar Piastri, currently holding a 22-point lead in the championship, rounded out the top three in the other McLaren, with all three title contenders eyeing the crucial eight points awarded for the sprint race winner.
