Max Verstappen entered the weekend with a critical task on his shoulders, needing to avoid losing nine points or more to the championship leader Lando Norris to stay in the title conversation. Starting the race in second behind Norris, Verstappen snatched the lead right on the opening lap after the McLaren driver ran wide at Turn 1. From there, the Dutchman steered his Red Bull to a comfortable victory, finishing nearly 21 seconds ahead of Norris, while Oscar Piastri inherited fourth place after Andrea Kimi Antonelli got hit with a five-second time penalty that dropped him to fifth. Norris celebrated his second-place finish knowing that he inched closer to his maiden world title, as this result put him 30 points clear of Piastri and 42 points ahead of Verstappen. His celebrations were short-lived however as both McLarens were disqualified post-race due to excessive plank wear, wiping out their points from finishing second and fourth. What had once seemed like a distant dream of a fifth consecutive world title for Verstappen suddenly became within reach, as he now finds himself tied with Piastri on points at 366, both sitting only 24 points behind Norris with two rounds remaining.
