In the meantime, though, Vinicius refused to commit to a contract extension beyond 2027, and that was taken as a sign that he was waiting to see how things played out in the dugout. After embarking on 13 victories in 14 games, Alonso had a strong start to life as the manager of his former playing days club but form dipped post-Clasico. That triumph put Real Madrid four points clear at the La Liga summit, but a string of losses and draws meant that it closed out the year four points behind arch nemesis Barca as Alonso faced the chopping block.
