Tether Unveils Open‑Source Bitcoin Mining OS, Positioning MOS as Next‑Gen Infrastructure
TL;DR
Tether launched Mining OS (MOS), an open-source operating system to manage, monitor, and automate Bitcoin mining projects at scale.
MOS operates as a unified, modular layer that coordinates hardware, energy consumption, device health, and mining infrastructure, from home setups to industrial sites.
Alongside MOS, Tether announced the Mining SDK, an open-source toolkit with workers, APIs, and UI tools to build mining software compatible with the core operating system.
Tether launched Mining OS (MOS), an open-source operating system designed to manage, monitor, and automate Bitcoin mining operations at scale. The software was released under the Apache 2.0 license and is already available as a production-ready system. The official announcement took place during the Plan ₿ Forum 2026 in San Salvador.
How Mining OS (MOS) Works
MOS operates as a unified operational layer that centralizes the management of hardware, energy consumption, device status, and site-level infrastructure for each mining operation. The system supports deployments ranging from small home setups with a limited number of machines to industrial installations managing hundreds of thousands of devices across multiple locations.
MOS features a modular, peer-to-peer architecture. Its design removes reliance on centralized services and proprietary software controlled by external vendors. Each component of a mining operation is managed as a worker within a single operational layer, allowing machines, energy usage, and infrastructure variables to be coordinated from one system.
The system is hardware-agnostic and can run on lightweight devices or integrate into large-scale deployments. MOS monitors hashrate, energy consumption, equipment health, and site variables without relying on fragmented stacks or closed tools.
Tether Addresses Bitcoin Mining Centralization
Alongside MOS, Tether announced the Mining SDK, the framework on which the operating system is built. The SDK was designed as a modular toolkit that allows developers to build mining software without recreating device integrations or core operational components. It includes preconfigured workers, simple APIs, and a kit for developing interfaces and internal dashboards.
The Mining SDK will be released as open-source software, with its development continuing in collaboration with the community. The goal is to enable the creation of customized tools for managing mining operations while maintaining compatibility with the MOS core.
Tether had previewed the development of an open-source Bitcoin mining operating system during 2025. The launch of MOS adds another component to the company’s expansion into crypto infrastructure, mining, and payments, beyond its core stablecoin business.
In 2025, Tether reported more than $10 billion in net profits, driven primarily by interest income on its reserves.
