Four of them – John McGraw, Bill Terry, Mel Ott, and Leo Durocher – are among the pilots in the Baseball Hall of Fame, with the still-active Dusty Baker (Astros) and Bruce Bochy (Rangers) virtually certain to follow. All but Ott won pennants with the Giants. Bob Melvin could join that select group soon after emerging as the top candidate to manage the team in 2024 and beyond. Still under contract to the San Diego Padres at a reported $4 million per year, Melvin has received permission to talk to the Giants about the job occupied this season by Gabe Kapler. Melvin, a native of the Bay Area, previously managed the Oakland Athletics for 10 years (2011-2021) but also piloted the Seattle Mariners, Arizona Diamondbacks, and San Diego Padres, starting in 2022. But his relationship with San Diego president of baseball operations A.J. Preller has deteriorated to the point where it’s unwise to invite them both to the same party. On the other hand, Padres chairman Peter Seidler said he wanted both men back before San Francisco indicated its interest. The Athletic reported over the weekend that Melvin is not only the front-runner for the San Francisco job but likely to bring several coaches with him when he makes the move north. According to Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle, they are third base coach Matt Williams, a four-time All-Star third baseman with the Giants, along with two other former Giants — Pat Burrell as hitting coach and Ryan Vogelsong as the new pitching coach.
