The Slow Adoption of ERC-4337 Accounts
ERC-4337 smart accounts face low adoption and operational challenges, despite initial optimism for their impact on EVM-compatible blockchains.
Retention is terrible.
The one exception to this is CyberConnect, who had a lot of users return to claim an airdrop.

Ethereum’s latest innovation, ERC-4337 smart accounts, was introduced with high expectations but recent data shows its adoption is lagging. John Rising, a proponent of Ethereum account abstraction, recently shared insights on the current status of ERC-4337 smart accounts. Despite the initial enthusiasm, these accounts have not seen the expected growth in user numbers and transaction activity.
Launched unexpectedly at WalletCon in Denver on March 1, the ERC-4337 standard got praise as a breakthrough for Ethereum users. It promised a more user-friendly experience on Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible blockchains by eliminating the need for seed phrases and simplifying transaction signing. However, the reality has been different from the optimistic forecasts.
Data from BundleBear, a platform for account abstraction data, paints a grim picture of the ERC-4337 adoption rate. Only a small fraction of users who started using these smart accounts continue to use them after six months. This low retention rate indicates a lack of long-term engagement with the technology. Moreover, the core components of this technology, known as bundlers, are struggling financially. Despite some projects inadvertently paying excessive gas fees, these bundlers are not reaping expected profits. This financial struggle is a significant barrier to the sustainability of the ERC-4337 ecosystem.
Furthermore, the average user of these smart accounts appears to be minimally active, with an average of only five operations conducted per account. This low level of activity suggests that users are not fully utilizing the potential of these accounts.
Industry Perspectives on ERC-4337 Smart Accounts
Despite these challenges, some industry experts remain optimistic about the future of ERC-4337 smart accounts. Jesse Pollak, a lead at Coinbase protocols and the creator of Base, argues that the adoption of this new technology will be a gradual process. He believes that growth and standardization are occurring at a healthy pace and that more organizations are considering adopting this technology.
However, in terms of actual usage, Dune Analytics data reveals a peak in active smart accounts in August, with over 420,000 across seven blockchains. However, this number has been declining, with only 143,000 monthly active accounts recorded in October. This decline in active users is a concerning trend for the future of ERC-4337 smart accounts.
The diverging views on the adoption of ERC-4337 smart accounts highlight the complexities of introducing new technologies in the blockchain space. While the initial concept and launch of ERC-4337 were met with optimism, the actual implementation and user engagement have not lived up to expectations. This disparity between expectation and reality is not uncommon in the rapidly evolving world of blockchain and cryptocurrency.
The slow adoption rate of ERC-4337 may come from different factors. The complexity of the technology, the financial challenges faced by infrastructure providers, and the lack of immediate, tangible benefits to users are significant hurdles. Furthermore, the cryptocurrency industry is known for its fast pace and constant innovation, which means new technologies often face stiff competition from other emerging solutions.
However, the optimism expressed by some industry leaders suggests that there is still hope for ERC-4337 smart accounts. As the technology matures and more users and developers understand its benefits, adoption rates could improve. The key to this growth will be in addressing the current challenges and making the technology more accessible and beneficial to a broader user base.
