Despite the increase, the television networks have to be pleased with the continued ratings performance of the NFL this season. Hindered by a writer’s and actor’s strikes that had halted the production of scripted programming for months, the prevalence of cord cutting and the continued viewer migration to streaming video, the viewing gap of the NFL with other content is wider than ever. This year, the ratings performance of regular season NFL games has even garnered a larger audience than any World Series or NBA Finals game. Thanksgiving week was the latest example of the popularity of live NFL games, the three nationally broadcast games on Thanksgiving Day averaged a record 34.1 million viewers. Here is a breakdown of all five nationally televised/streamed games during Thanksgiving week. · The Monday Night Football game on ABC/ESPN (and other Disney properties) was a Super Bowl LVII rematch (Philadelphia vs. Kansas City). The game averaged 29 million viewers, the most watched MNF game in 27 years. (Taylor Swift was not in attendance.) Benefitting from more games simulcast on ABC, the ratings delivery of MNF this season has jumped 26% from one year ago. · The early afternoon game on Thanksgiving on Fox (Detroit vs. Green Bay), tallied an average audience of 33.7 million viewers.
