The DOJ indicted Ver in April 2024 on charges of mail fraud and tax evasion. Authorities accused him of failing to file tax returns on capital gains from selling tens of thousands of bitcoins. The charges relate to crypto holdings Ver owned before he gave up his US citizenship.
Spanish authorities arrested Ver after the indictment was filed. He posted bail within days. Ver has been fighting extradition to the United States since his arrest.
The original indictment claimed Ver and his companies, MemoryDealers and Agilestar, held approximately 131,000 BTC in 2014. According to prosecutors, Ver tried to avoid paying taxes by renouncing his citizenship and later becoming a citizen of St. Kitts and Nevis. The DOJ stated that Ver remained legally required to report and pay taxes on certain distributions even after giving up his citizenship.
Legal Strategy and Political Connections
Ver hired political consultant Roger Stone, an adviser to President Donald Trump, to lobby for changes to US tax laws. Ver paid Stone $600,000 for his services. Stone filed a lobbying registration earlier this year documenting his work on Ver’s behalf.
Ver also hired lawyers who previously worked for Trump. These connections to the current administration came as Trump issued pardons to several crypto figures. The president pardoned Ross Ulbricht, the Silk Road founder, along with Arthur Hayes and other Bitmex founders.

No one should spend the rest of their life in prison over taxes. Let him pay the tax (if any) and be done with it. #FreeRoger pic.twitter.com/flP573hm0N

Settlement Details and Next Steps
The proposed settlement has not been filed with the federal court yet. It remains subject to change and requires approval from the judge overseeing the case. The Times reported that both Ver and the Justice Department declined to comment on the settlement.
Court records show a hearing scheduled for December 15, 2025. The settlement would allow Ver to avoid prison time if approved. The US Department of Justice’s Los Angeles office filed the original indictment.
Ver’s X profile currently links to a petition asking Trump to pardon him. His website features an open letter calling the prosecution a retaliatory action for his Bitcoin advocacy. Ross Ulbricht previously called for leniency in Ver’s case, stating no one should spend life in prison over taxes.
Binance founder Changpeng Zhao has also applied for a presidential pardon after serving four months in prison for violations related to anti-money laundering compliance. The settlement agreement represents a potential resolution to Ver’s legal troubles that began with his 2024 arrest in Spain.
