A group of nine European banks, including major players like ING and UniCredit, announced on Sept. 25 that they would launch a euro-denominated stablecoin in a push to counter American digital market dominance.

The bank’s president, Christine Lagarde, said in June that private stablecoins brought risks to monetary policy and financial stability, encouraging European lawmakers to back a digital version of the Euro.
