Altcoins Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has publicly denied allegations made in a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) article that claimed he was involved in promoting World Liberty Financial (WLFI)—a crypto project reportedly backed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. The WSJ report suggested that Steve Witkoff, a former Trump administration envoy to the Middle East, along with his son Zach Witkoff, supported WLFI’s expansion in the region. The article alleged that Zhao had helped facilitate international outreach and promotional efforts for the project. In response, Zhao described the report as a “smear piece”, asserting that it misrepresented both his actions and affiliations. He stated that he had no personal or professional connections to WLFI or its leadership, and that he had never promoted the project. Zhao revealed that the WSJ contacted him prior to publication with a series of questions that he believed were based on incorrect assumptions and factual inaccuracies. One of the questions reportedly asked whether he was “establishing the overseas connections of the Trump-backed project WLFI.” Rather than respond directly, Zhao and his team informed the publication that the questions reflected misinformation and unfounded inferences. Despite this, he noted, the article still included a statement asserting that he had facilitated overseas promotions for WLFI. Zhao emphasized that he had no involvement with the project and viewed the WSJ’s coverage as biased and irresponsible journalism.
