How PlebLab is Shaping the Future of Bitcoin Startups in Austin

Emerging from the vibrant Austin tech scene, PlebLab.dev has gained recognition as a pivotal player in the Bitcoin startup landscape. While many may have heard whispers of this specialized Bitcoin community, few truly grasp the depth of their impact and the achievements they have amassed.

Initiated in 2021 as a collaborative workspace within Capital Factory by a group of Bitcoin advocates, PlebLab has rapidly evolved into a central hub for Bitcoin entrepreneurs in the United States. They organize a multitude of events and gatherings throughout the year, creating a supportive atmosphere for Bitcoin enthusiasts, whether they’re long-term residents of Austin or mere visitors. 

“During my time in art school, I had a professor who encouraged us to pause our work after an hour. We’d take a walk and then provide candid critiques of one another’s projects, fostering a spirit of collaboration that facilitated our growth. That concept resonated with me,” reflects Car González, the CEO of PlebLab. “When I took the reins at PlebLab, I pondered: ‘How can I enhance collaboration? How can we center our approach around that, instead of merely coworking?’ Coworking as a concept is just an environment for work. It can feel monotonous—merely being productive around others who are also busy. That’s not engaging.” 

PlebLab extends beyond the typical “coworking” concept; it has positioned itself as a “community accelerator for the Bitcoin era,” nurturing numerous successful Bitcoin ventures and renowned developers since it began its journey. 

The Origin Story

Established with the vision of fostering local Bitcoin development, PlebLab secured its initial office space at Capital Factory, a leading tech coworking center in Austin, in 2021. Co-founders Car González, Keyan Kousha, and Kyle Murphy initiated Bitcoin meetups that attracted over 200 participants. Numerous entrepreneurs and developers gravitated towards them, seeking collaborative opportunities within Capital Factory’s walls. 

As time progressed, PlebLab expanded to various office locations, eventually settling near Unchained Capital and Bitcoin Park (formerly known as Bitcoin Commons) in downtown Austin (at the intersection of 6th St. and Congress Ave.). With increased space, expertise, and talent, PlebLab has undergone a transformation from a simple coworking space into a hybrid of a hacker garage and a startup incubator.

Currently, PlebLab offers various membership options, mentorship programs, and a myriad of resources for startups that join their initiative. However, it’s important to note that this isn’t a conventional “pay-to-play Bitcoin We-work.” Memberships may be denied based on the project’s objectives and aspirations. It resembles a private club for builders and tech enthusiasts instead of a typical coworking space.

“I genuinely believe we function as an accelerator for the Bitcoin era. Achieving that in an open-source, cypherpunk framework means you won’t just provide someone with $500k on their first day and state, ‘You have three months to succeed or goodbye.’ To me, that approach is reflective of a fiat-centric mindset,” remarked Car.

Key Events

PlebLab organizes significant events like Top Builder and Startup Day, typically scheduled within six months of each other.

“Top Builder operates like the Top Chef of Bitcoin. We aim to discover exceptional builders, gather them, and have them create a minimum viable product (MVP) or something presentable,” explained Car, characterizing the event as a three-month hackathon that connects finalists with venture capitalists and angel investors.

Conversely, Startup Day serves as a brief conference designed for Bitcoin startups to showcase their projects, connect with talent, and gain visibility within the Bitcoin community. In Car’s words, it aims to “motivate individuals to transition from being passive observers to actively building their companies. They can envision themselves in the individuals presenting on stage.”

Evaluating Success by Impact

Numerous prominent figures in the Bitcoin startup community have made their mark at PlebLab, and Car remains humble, emphasizing the contributions of various founders and leaders he has observed throughout their journeys. 

“Witnessing individuals evolve from initial encounters, through handshakes, to where they eventually land—celebrating their achievements as they hit significant milestones like base camp, a funding round, or their pre-seed or seed stages—it feels rewarding,” said Car. “That base camp achievement, for me, translates to ‘Awesome, they did it.’ Now, let’s assist the next person. That’s what I find gratifying—the actual deployment of innovative solutions, so to speak. We simply endeavor to be good custodians of that.”

Jippi – Champion of Top Builder 2025

Guided by Oliver, Jippi.app is an exciting Bitcoin application tailored for Gen Z. Reflecting the success of Pokemon Go, Jippi motivates young users to explore their locales in pursuit of Bitcoin Beasts—adorable 3D figures concealed in augmented reality that await future owners with satoshi rewards.

Having been in development for over a year, the app recently clinched first place in PlebLab’s Top Builder contest amidst fierce competition. The app, with its functioning prototype, user surveys, and tests conducted at a local university, left a profound impression on both judges and the audience. With its compelling pitch and vision, Jippi holds the potential to resonate with a younger demographic, ushering them into the realm of Bitcoin.  

Stacker.news

Launched in 2021 by one of PlebLab’s co-founders, Keyan Kousha, Stacker.news has swiftly become a leading source of news for many tech-forward Bitcoin enthusiasts. Operating as an open-source, Lightning-enabled version of Reddit, the platform has cultivated a dedicated and interactive community where users reward one another with satoshis for upvotes, often integrating cutting-edge technology in the Bitcoin social media arena.

Zaprite

Kicked off in late 2021 by John Magill, Zaprite has evolved into a comprehensive payment processing solution for businesses, enabling Bitcoin and Lightning transactions while accommodating merchants’ preferences for fiat settlements, event ticketing, and the essential tools for modern invoicing and accounting.
Recently, Zaprite made headlines when Donald J. Trump used their interface to purchase a burger with Bitcoin at the Bitcoin Pub Pub Key in New York.

Mutiny Wallet

Debuting in early 2023 under the guidance of prominent Bitcoin developers Ben Carman and Tony Giorgio, Mutiny Wallet quickly captivated Lightning users with its innovative features and comprehensive functionality. It consistently integrated state-of-the-art payment technologies, including e-cash-denominated transactions and Nostr integration, all while showcasing its distinctive red-and-black branding.

Despite announcing plans to wind down further development due to challenges faced by competitors, Mutiny Wallet has exhibited remarkable technological prowess and left behind a sophisticated suite of open-source tools for the Lightning, Nostr, and e-cash spheres.

Nifty (Bitcoin++)

As a Bitcoin and Lightning developer, Nifty earned acclaim for her educational initiatives aimed at developers through Base 58, her renowned developer events known as Bitcoin++, and her tireless work ethic that connects Bitcoin developer communities globally multiple times a year. Nifty’s influence has swiftly risen in the Bitcoin startup ecosystem, including her role on the board of Opensats, a charity focused on funding open-source Bitcoin initiatives, with a particular emphasis on Nostr—the social media protocol native to Bitcoin. Throughout her ascent, Nifty has spent considerable time at PlebLab and frequently appears at Bitcoin events in Austin.

Nifty’s next Bitcoin++ event is scheduled for May 7-9 in Austin, TX, delving deep into the topic of Bitcoin Mempool.

Supertestnet

A trailblazer in both PlebLab and the Bitcoin Austin community, Supertestnet emerged in 2021, rapidly mastering the creation of Bitcoin prototypes using JavaScript. His impressive track record includes the implementation of cutting-edge Bitcoin technologies such as BitVM, and participation in the first Ark mainnet pool, providing a non-custodial layer-2 scaling solution for Bitcoin. An enthusiastic user of X and Nostr, Supertestnet has cultivated a reputation within the Bitcoin startup ecosystem for his numerous open source creations and unwavering integrity, ensuring his notable place in the history of Bitcoin.

Cascdr

Headed by Jim, an AI engineer and staunch Bitcoin advocate, Cascdr aims to merge the potentials of AI and Bitcoin, reinforcing strong privacy measures and offering an impressive suite of AI applications and workflows. One of his latest innovations, PullThatUpJamie.ai, is a podcast search engine that transcribes audio content, making it searchable and enabling users to create shareable podcast clips.

BRANTA

Under the leadership of Keith, Branta is dedicated to cybersecurity, focusing on minimizing man-in-the-middle risks associated with Bitcoin payment workflows, such as malicious address or invoice injections in merchants’ systems. Emerging from PlebLab’s accelerator program, Branta has achieved notable successes in fundraising and was recognized as a top-five finalist in the Top Builder competition.

Topher

A distinguished Bitcoin developer and regular presence at PlebLab, Topher has contributed numerous open-source Bitcoin tools, including Tapscript, which aids in managing Taproot, Schnorr Signatures, and Bitcoin transactions. Alongside Austin (a fellow app developer), Topher is developing Frostr, a key management solution aimed at streamlining private digital identity management. Frostr seeks to address key rotation challenges within Nostr, the popular Bitcoin-adjacent social network protocol, utilizing the innovative “Frost” model—an emerging multisignature standard for Bitcoin wallets. This technically advanced project promises to be highly valuable, which I will cover in greater detail soon. 

Christopher David, Open Agents

A veteran Bitcoin developer and entrepreneur, Christopher is currently working on Open Agents, an AI platform intricately linked to Git processes, adorned with a dark-cypherpunk aesthetic while prioritizing user privacy.
