The decision wasn’t surprising, as discussions had previously raised concerns about the ambitious nature of the project. Splitting it into smaller parts was seen as a way to reduce complexity and improve the launch process. Initially set to be Ethereum’s biggest hard fork, Pectra represents a major software overhaul. (A hard fork is when a blockchain splits to implement significant updates.) By narrowing the focus of the upgrade, developers hope to streamline the rollout, with the first part still on track for early 2025.
