Jurors were unable to agree on money laundering and sanctions-related counts, but prosecutors have accused him of enabling more than $1 billion in illicit transactions, including funds allegedly tied to North Korea’s Lazarus Group.
His legal team plans to challenge the verdict, while advocacy group Free Pertsev & Storm warns that if the appeal fails, Storm could face years behind bars — or decades if other charges are retried. Supporters argue the case sets a dangerous precedent, blurring the line between writing open-source code and running a custodial financial service.
DeFi advocacy groups maintain that developers should not be held liable for how others use noncustodial, peer-to-peer software. As the fundraising effort grows, many in the crypto space see the outcome as a defining moment for privacy tech and decentralized finance.
