The Blaugrana has just concluded a highly successful maiden season under Hansi Flick, which saw it win all three trophies on offer in Spain and also reach the last four of the Champions League for the first time since 2019. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez won’t sit idly by, however, and is seeking to break up this domestic dominance by hiring a new head coach in Xabi Alonso and also making defensive signings. FC Barcelona counterpart Joan Laporta knows that he will also need to strengthen Flick’s squad to continue at the top of the heap, and go further in Europe. According to Mundo Deportivo, Barca already has an agreement in principle with Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia while there have been previous links to pursuits for a new full back and someone capable of occupying different positions in attack such as Liverpool’s Luis Diaz. Yet while Barca looks to make improvements on almost every line, there will be no signings in midfield according to SPORT. Counting Frenkie de Jong, Marc Casado, Marc Bernal, Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Fermin Lopez and Pablo Torre, Flick currently has eight players for three positions. At the start of the 2024/2025 season, Flick often went for a double pivot of Pedri and Casado, yet De Jong gradually phased the latter-mentioned La Masia graduate out of the fold when recovering from injury.
