Seybert ordered Santos to begin his sentence by July 25. Santos became the sixth person expelled from the House in December 2023 when his colleagues voted to eject him following a House Ethics Committee report into an extensive lying scandal covering everything from his college degrees to his alleged Jewish heritage. The House Ethics probe also produced evidence that Santos used his campaign funds to pay for a lavish lifestyle. In his plea deal, he agreed to pay restitution of at least $373,749 and admitted to making false statements to the Federal Elections Commission, committing wire fraud and fraudulently using IDs and credit cards for his personal benefit.
