Tokenized assets allow for instant settlement of equity transactions.
Tokenization is changing the way we think about money, moving beyond traditional fiat currencies like the US dollar. According to Kraken’s Mark Greenberg, anything from Bitcoin to Tesla stock can now be considered money, thanks to blockchain technology. This evolution is enabling users to save, trade, and transfer assets with unparalleled speed and flexibility, marking a shift that could redefine global finance in the coming years.
Tokenization Moves Beyond Fiat: A New Era of Digital Assets
Tokenization is rapidly reshaping the way people perceive and use money. As digital technologies evolve, blockchain tokenization has expanded beyond fiat currencies, enabling a broader range of assets to be used as money. Kraken’s head of consumer, Mark Greenberg, recently discussed this trend and emphasized how tokenization is making it possible to save and transfer nearly any asset, from stocks to gold, across various platforms with ease.
Kraken is no longer just an exchange.
They’re aiming to be the app store for finance.
While some exchanges build mega apps that serve everyone, Kraken is building different apps for each user type.

This change represents a significant shift in the financial industry, as traditional assets like stocks and real estate can now be digitized and traded much like cryptocurrencies. Greenberg explained that tokenization allows for greater flexibility and speed when managing and moving assets. Whether it’s Tesla stock or Bitcoin, tokenization allows people to hold and move value without being tied to fiat currencies like the US dollar.
Tokenized Assets on Kraken and Other Platforms
Kraken has been at the forefront of this development, offering tokenized stocks through its xStocks platform. These tokenized stocks, which are available outside of the US, have already gained significant attention, with more than 80,000 wallets and over $14 billion in trading volume since their launch in the second quarter of this year. Tokenized stocks enable investors to buy, sell, and transfer traditional stocks on a blockchain network, bypassing many of the traditional barriers to asset trading.
Kraken’s push into tokenized assets reflects a broader trend across crypto exchanges. Other platforms like Coinbase and Gemini are also adopting tokenized stocks to diversify their offerings. These platforms are shifting beyond just cryptocurrency trading to include traditional equities and even prediction markets. The demand for tokenized stocks has only grown, as more investors seek access to these digital asset classes.
The Benefits of Tokenization Over Traditional Finance
One of the primary benefits of tokenization is speed. Greenberg highlighted how transferring assets between different brokers or platforms in traditional finance often takes a significant amount of time—sometimes weeks or even months. With tokenized assets, transactions can happen almost instantly.
“If I want to move funds from Coinbase to Kraken, that can happen in seconds,” Greenberg noted, emphasizing the efficiency of blockchain technology compared to traditional financial systems. Additionally, tokenization offers instant settlement of equity transactions, an area where traditional finance systems still struggle.
Traditional securities infrastructure has remained largely unchanged for over five decades, often leading to delays and inefficiencies. Blockchain tokenization, by contrast, allows for real-time settlements, reducing the risk and delay associated with traditional asset transfers. This makes the process smoother and more accessible to users across different platforms.
The Future of Tokenization and Real-World Assets
The rise of tokenized assets has also been accompanied by a significant increase in the value of real-world assets being tokenized on blockchain networks. According to data from RWA.xyz, nearly $415 billion worth of real-world assets are currently tokenized on-chain, a figure that is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.
Boston Consulting Group has predicted that tokenized assets could reach $16 trillion by 2030, while McKinsey & Co. suggests a more conservative estimate of $2 trillion. Greenberg and other industry leaders believe tokenization will continue to push the boundaries of what can be considered money.
With tokenized assets, users have the flexibility to hold anything from stocks and bonds to commodities like gold. This approach is not limited to financial assets, as tokenization could potentially extend to real estate, art, and other non-financial assets in the future. As the technology advances, the line between traditional finance and blockchain-based finance will continue to blur.
