Now, they have something else in common: their teams enter the bowl season with the nation’s top turnarounds. The Wildcats are 7-5 for a six-game improvement and the Bulls 6-6 for a plus-five. Nobody had a right to expect such a turnaround in Evanston. Not only because the Wildcats lost 11 of 12 with the lowest scoring output (13.8 points) among power conference teams in 2022. That is one thing. Quite another was an off-season that resulted in the firing of Pat Fitzgerald, the school’s winningest coach and former Northwestern All-American linebacker, amid a hazing scandal within the program. Hired by Fitzgerald in January to be the Wildcats’ defensive coordinator, a position he held at North Dakata State the previous four years, Braun was named interim coach in July, one month before preseason camp. Five months later, Braun has Northwestern going to a bowl for only the second time since 2018. A 23-15 victory against visiting Purdue on November 18 was the Wildcats’ sixth win. The week before, Northwestern traveled to Madison and defeated Wisconsin, 24-10, to snap a 14-game road losing streak. In the aftermath of that win, the school removed Braun’s interim tag and made the 38-year-old the program’s 30th head coach. “The opportunity to become bowl eligible is something that all of us within the program are really proud of,” said Braun,…
