Nvidia Forms 6G Telecom Alliance
Nvidia has partnered with telecom giants including Nokia Oyj, SoftBank Group, and T-Mobile US to accelerate the deployment of AI-powered 6G networks. The collaboration was unveiled at a major telecom industry conference in Barcelona, highlighting Nvidia’s push to expand its influence beyond traditional data center applications.
The alliance aims to build 6G networks using software-controlled radios running on general-purpose computers. By integrating AI into network operations, the system can manage radio traffic efficiently and securely, a necessity given the limited radio spectrum available for emerging applications.
“5G was designed to connect people through voice and data, but it cannot support the widespread adoption of AI,” said Ronnie Vasishta, Nvidia’s head of telecommunications strategy.
He added that future networks will need “hundreds of thousands of times” more efficiency, and AI can help achieve that while routing traffic safely.
AI-RAN Field Trials Show Progress
Nvidia is already testing its AI-RAN (Radio Access Network) platform in real-world scenarios. T-Mobile US successfully completed an over-the-air call using the system, which runs RAN Layer 1 workloads on Nvidia GPUs while simultaneously supporting AI applications on the Grace Hopper platform.
SoftBank Corp. also conducted a live trial using fully software-defined 5G on Nvidia’s AI-RAN system, hitting a milestone in operational deployment. The platform is designed to support “physical AI” applications, including autonomous vehicles and robotics, signaling the potential for networks to become intelligent computing infrastructures rather than mere communication pipelines.
Open 6G Architecture Targets Market Flexibility
Nvidia emphasizes that the envisioned 6G networks will be built on open radios controlled by software running on general-purpose computers. This design allows new providers to enter the market, potentially lowering barriers imposed by traditional telecom hardware vendors.
The move aligns with initiatives like OCUDU (Open CU DU), a U.S. government-linked open-source project aimed at standardizing core RAN components for 6G. While Nvidia’s Aerial platform includes open-source reference code, much of the heavy lifting still relies on Nvidia’s CUDA architecture, which could tie operators to Nvidia’s ecosystem.
Implications for Telecom and AI Markets
By positioning telecom operators as distributed AI cloud providers, Nvidia could reshape the industry. Nokia demonstrated a model where unused GPU capacity in a distributed AI-RAN network could be monetized as external AI compute. Such developments could expand AI demand far beyond data centers, creating new revenue streams but also introducing operational complexity.
Despite the promising technology, Nvidia’s stock experienced a slight decline. Analysts suggest that while investors are intrigued by the long-term potential of AI-powered 6G, uncertainty around rollout timelines, hardware dependencies, and regulatory hurdles may be weighing on near-term sentiment.
