OpenAI has just expanded its Stargate initiative with its agreement to rent an additional 4.5 gigawatts of data center power from Oracle Corp. in the United States. The scale and timing of the deal are just the latest exhibits to underscore the massive computational demands of advanced AI products. The agreement is part of the broader Stargate project, which is a $500 billion joint venture involving giants like OpenAI, Oracle, SoftBank, and Abu Dhabi’s MGX, with the aim of extensively leveling up AI infrastructure across the US. As things stand, Oracle has already erected a massive data center in Abilene, Texas, for OpenAI alongside development partner, Crusoe. However, if it must meet the additional demand from OpenAI, the cloud infrastructure provider will need to develop multiple data centers across the US with partners, the sources said.
