Vitalik Buterin Highlights Future Ethereum Protocol Improvements Post-Merge. Ethereum news today: On October 14, 2024, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published part one of a blog series titled “Possible Futures of the Ethereum Protocol, part 1: The Merge”. The post explores Ethereum’s progress since transitioning to proof of stake (PoS) and outlines key areas for future improvement. Possible futures of the Ethereum protocol, part 1: the Mergehttps://t.co/JycODdM4wW — vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) October 14, 2024 Key Points: The Merge’s Success: Ethereum transitioned from proof of work (PoW) to PoS two years ago, bringing significant stability, performance, and decentralization benefits. However, areas such as transaction finality time and democratizing staking still need improvement. Single Slot Finality & Staking Democratization: Single Slot Finality: Buterin seeks to reduce the time it takes for a transaction to be finalized from 15 minutes to a single slot (~12 seconds). This would increase user security and simplify the protocol. Staking Accessibility: Reducing the current 32 ETH staking requirement to just 1 ETH would encourage more solo staking and reduce reliance on staking pools, making Ethereum more decentralized. Challenges in Achieving Goals Faster finality and democratized staking conflict with minimizing node operator overhead. Buterin introduces several potential solutions: Option 1: Brute Force: This would involve developing more efficient signature aggregation using technologies like ZK-SNARKs. Option 2: Orbit Committees: This is a novel mechanism that allows a randomly selected medium-sized committee to finalize the chain while preserving the cost-of-attack properties. Option 3: Two-Tiered Staking: Implementing two classes of stakers, with larger deposits directly involved in economic finality and smaller deposits playing a supporting role. These proposed upgrades aim to increase Ethereum’s security, efficiency, and accessibility, keeping it competitive with other blockchains while staying true to its decentralization ethos.
