Luisa Crawford May 19, 2025 04:19 Taiwan’s National Center for High-Performance Computing is set to launch an NVIDIA-powered supercomputer, significantly enhancing AI, climate, and quantum research capabilities across the nation. In a significant technological leap, Taiwan’s National Center for High-Performance Computing (NCHC) is set to deploy an NVIDIA-powered AI supercomputer, expected to revolutionize research capabilities across the nation. This cutting-edge system was announced at the COMPUTEX event and is anticipated to be operational later this year, according to NVIDIA’s blog. Enhanced AI and Quantum Research Capabilities The new supercomputer will feature NVIDIA HGX H200 systems with over 1,700 GPUs and other advanced NVIDIA systems, interconnected by NVIDIA Quantum InfiniBand networking. This setup will provide more than eight times the AI performance compared to the previous Taiwania 2 system, significantly boosting research in AI, climate science, and quantum computing. Chau-Lyan Chang, director general of NCHC, emphasized the supercomputer’s role in driving breakthroughs in sovereign AI, quantum computing, and advanced scientific computation. The system aims to enhance Taiwan’s technological autonomy and foster global AI leadership. Local Language Models and Sovereign AI The supercomputer will support projects like Taiwan AI RAP, a generative AI platform aiding in the rapid development of AI products tailored to local cultural and linguistic nuances. This initiative includes models from Taiwan’s Trustworthy AI Dialogue Engine (TAIDE), designed for natural language processing and intelligent customer service. TAIDE is also instrumental in developing sovereign AI applications, offering developers access to Llama3.1-TAIDE foundation models. These models are used in various sectors, including education and healthcare, to enhance communication and information delivery. Accelerating Climate Research In climate research, NCHC supports the use of NVIDIA’s Earth-2 platform to advance atmospheric science. Researchers are utilizing AI models like Earth-2’s CorrDiff and DeepMind’s GraphCast for precise weather forecasting and global atmospheric dynamics predictions. The new…
