Thailand Launches ‘TouristDigiPay’ to Boost Tourism with Crypto Payments
Thailand launches TouristDigiPay to let tourists convert crypto to baht for QR payments, boosting tourism with secure regulation.
Thailand is set to launch an innovative program called “TouristDigiPay” on August 18, 2025. This initiative will allow foreign tourists to convert their cryptocurrency into Thai baht for seamless payments. Specifically, tourists will be able to pay using QR codes in different businesses located around the country. The program is focused on increasing Thailand as a destination among crypto-savvy tourists. It will run under regulatory sandbox to achieve safety and compliance.
Crypto Payments Targeted in Thailand’s New Tourism Push
The tourism sector in Thailand has faced challenges recently. It is quite notable that the number of visitors has fallen significantly with one of the most important markets being China. This has made the government seek alternative avenues of reviving tourism. This slowdown has led to the direct response of the scheme called the TouristDigiPay. Thailand wants to capture an additional number of tourists who would like to use crypto payments, which is why it permits them.
The program will be announced in the form of a press conference by the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira on August 18. Other officials joining him are those of the Finance Ministry, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. They will collectively tell how the program exactly works and its impact to the tourists and economy.
In the past, Thailand made moves to adopt digital currencies. The SEC and the Bank of Thailand rolled out a national crypto sandbox in July. The present project was the foundation of the project-TouristDigiPay. It will enable the foreign tourists to trade their digital assets on Thai baht. The sandbox makes the process secure and is highly regulated.

Tourists to Use Crypto Via QR Payments Under Thai Regulations
To participate, tourists must open accounts with a digital asset business and an e-money provider. The SEC and the Bank of Thailand are the regulators of the two. Besides, they require participants to undergo stringent Know Your Customer (KYC) and Customer Due Diligence (CDD). Such measures, under the enforcement of AMLO, assist in prohibiting fraud and money laundering. The service can only be used by foreign tourists who are just passing through Thailand.
The rules of the “TouristDigiPay” scheme are obvious. As an example, it establishes spending limits of 50,000- 500,000 baht per month. This will be responsible consumption of the service. In addition, they do not permit direct payments using digital assets. Instead, tourists will be required to exchange their crypto to baht to pay electronically, i.e., to scan a QR code at restaurants or shops.
The government has been considering the use of cryptocurrency in tourism for a long period of time. Previously, the SEC conducted an open discussion of financial innovation and digital assets. The deadline for feedback was August 13, 2025. The favorable reaction contributed to the design of the “TouristDigiPay” program. As a result, Thailand is becoming a progressive destination for modern travellers.
To sum up, “TouristDigiPay” will be an ambitious move in the direction of tourism and the digital economy in Thailand. The country is specifically welcoming crypto payments as a way to get more tourists and stimulate business. The stringent policies of the program are secure but open to innovation. Thailand is leading by example when it implements this initiative, since other countries seeking to integrate tourism and cryptocurrency can take cues.
