WhatsApp introduces the new Private Processing feature, designed to offer a completely private way to interact with Meta’s artificial intelligence (AI). This technology, which will be available in the coming weeks, ensures users the highest level of security and privacy during AI conversations, without Meta or third parties being able to access the exchanged content. Private Processing: what it is and how Protected AI Interactions work on WhatsApp Private Processing of WhatsApp allows users to send requests to the AI to process messages, for example, to obtain chat summaries or other virtual assistance features. However, unlike traditional systems, this technology operates in such a way that the data related to the requests is not stored after the end of the session. Meta does not retain nor can it see the messages processed through Private Processing. This approach significantly limits the risk that cyber attacks or unauthorized access could compromise user privacy. In short, any AI processing takes place in an isolated environment, and the data disappears immediately after the analysis. Security and transparency: the promise of Meta Meta intends to protect the system from attacks targeted at users without compromising the entire backend mechanism. To strengthen trust, it has opened the possibility of independent audits, so that external entities can effectively verify compliance with privacy and security standards. Furthermore, Private Processing is already included in Meta’s bug bounty program, aimed at discovering and fixing vulnerabilities before the public launch. Before the official distribution, the company will publish a detailed technical document that will explain the engineering solutions adopted. Meta vs Apple: two visions compared The Private Processing model is reminiscent in some ways of Apple’s technology called Private Cloud Compute (PCC), with both designed to reduce intrusions into user privacy. Apple prioritizes AI processing directly on devices, shifting computations to…
