Buterin emphasized that Ethereum is undergoing a significant shift. The ecosystem is moving away from small-scale, somewhat clunky applications toward solutions that can be adopted by tens of millions of people. The goal is to create user-friendly applications that align with Ethereum’s core principles.

The Challenge of Accessibility

As attention shifts from Ethereum Layer 1 mainnet to Layer 2 and the broader application ecosystem, developers face the challenge of appealing to users of varying skill levels without relying on centralized infrastructure.

Buterin stressed the importance of applications that cater to crypto newcomers while avoiding a scenario where everyone interacts with decentralized systems through centralized accounts (like Google).

Striking a Balance

While acknowledging that solutions for beginners may not always resonate with advanced users, Buterin highlighted the need to find common ground. The key lies in creating applications that work seamlessly for both audiences, allowing smooth transitions between skill levels.

Buterin also discussed the role of centralized finance (CeFi) firms like Coinbase. These platforms can help onboard surface-level crypto users, expanding their participation beyond mere buying and holding of coins.

Cross-Chain Interoperability

To improve cross-chain interoperability, Buterin urged developers to reduce friction when transferring assets and accessing dApps across various Layer 2 networks. He pointed to emerging upgrades like ERC-3370 and ERC-7683, which aim to simplify cross-chain transfers.

As developers increasingly focus on Layer 2 solutions, Buterin called for prioritizing decentralized architecture. He reiterated his stance that rollup chains exhibiting Stage 0 decentralization should not be labeled as “rollups.” Instead, he encouraged moving toward more decentralized structures.

Buterin described Stage 1 decentralization as maintaining “limited training wheels.” In this phase, a chain hosts a centralized security council with the authority to override permissionless state root submissions in case of bugs.

At the time of writing, Ethereum (ETH) is trading at around $3,100, down a little more than 1%, according to data from CoinMarketCap. As the ecosystem evolves, striking this delicate balance will be crucial for Ethereum’s continued growth and adoption.
