Meta will continue advancing its Llama models while developing next-gen systems aimed at reaching the AI frontier.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced the formation of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), a new division aimed at developing the next wave of AI systems with capabilities bordering on superintelligence.
The initiative will consolidate Meta’s existing AI research efforts under one ambitious mission, while aggressively recruiting some of the field’s brightest minds.
Wang and Friedman tapped to lead Meta’s AI future
Leading the charge is Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, who now serves as Meta’s Chief AI Officer. Wang is joined by Nat Friedman, former GitHub CEO and a key AI investor, who will co-lead the lab’s applied research and product integration efforts. Their leadership reflects Meta’s focus on bringing both cutting-edge research and practical product development under one strategic vision.
“As the pace of AI progress accelerates, developing superintelligence is coming into sight. I believe this will be the beginning of a new era for humanity, and I am fully committed to doing what it takes for Meta to lead the way. ” Zuckerberg said in an internal memo shared with employees

Top AI talent flocking to Meta in major hiring spree
The company has recently pulled in AI experts from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic, and other leading labs. Among them are contributors to groundbreaking systems like GPT-4o, Gemini, and the o-series models.meta Many of these hires reportedly came as a result of eight-figure offers, as Meta seeks to leapfrog competitors like OpenAI and Google in a rapidly heating AI race.
While some acquisition talks, including ones involving startups led by OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever and Perplexity , didn’t materialize, Meta has been building a formidable internal roster.
According to Zuckerberg, “We’re going to call our overall organization Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). This includes all of our foundations, product, and FAIR teams, as well as a new lab focused on developing the next generation of our models.”
Llama models remain central
MSL will continue to evolve Meta’s Llama family of open-source foundation models, with updates like Llama 4.1 and 4.2 already in the pipeline. These models currently power Meta AI, the company’s suite of AI assistants used by over a billion people each month. Simultaneously, the lab is kicking off early research for a new generation of models that could reach the frontier of superintelligence in the next year.
That said, Meta believes it is uniquely equipped to lead this charge, citing its vast compute infrastructure, product reach, and rapid product deployment cycles. Zuckerberg also pointed to Meta’s growing footprint in AI wearables, including smart glasses, as a key differentiator in delivering intelligent agents to real-world users.
