Binance Refutes Money Laundering Charges Replying to Reuters
Binance has denied reports that the U.S. Department of Justice has filed charges.
Tigran Gambaryan highlighted the growth of his security and compliance team.
The biggest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, Binance, has replied to a Reuters piece saying the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) uncovered solid evidence of breaking U.S. sanctions, namely anti-money laundering laws.
Binance has responded to Reuters’ allegations by saying their platform is well-protected against any instances of money laundering and that cryptocurrencies are not a safe haven for criminals.
Moreover, Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has denied reports that the U.S. Department of Justice has filed charges against the company. The exchange maintains that its internal team collaborates with law enforcement to “case-work on high-impact ransomware and hack cases.”
Growth of Security and Compliance Team
The global head of intelligence and investigations at Binance, Tigran Gambaryan, highlighted the growth of his security and compliance team by more than 500% in a single year. Moreover, they continue to do so because they see it as their moral obligation, even if investing in the people, technology, and efforts to fight cybercrime does not immediately result in the generating of money.
Before joining Binance, Tigram was a Special Agent for more than a decade in the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation’s Cyber Crimes Unit (IRS-CI). To help those whose lives had been upended by the Mt. Gox incident and to find the dishonest DEA officers engaged in the Silk Road case, he undertook investigations.
Binance also denied allegations made in June 2022 by the same media outlet, which claimed that “Binance is a safe-house for hackers, scammers, and drug traffickers.” The Binance team also highlighted how blockchain transactions are among the simplest to trace, which often works against the interests of those engaging in illicit activity.
